Why, may I ask? Is it the writing itself? Does it make you want to throw away your pen like a horn player tossing his axe out after hearing Bird? Carver, the sonofabitch, was good. Is it something in the story that has put you at odds with Carver? Are you unable to accept the possible death of an innocent at the hands of its selfish parents?
The best answer to your question is 'yes', because it was both. The fact that in four hundred words he could hook my interest in these two people to the point that I'm actually feeling their tension astounds me. But that he could then take all that and throw it in the mud with that ending disgusts me. So now I hate him for the sheer ability and will to do that to me.
Down these mean streets a Moose must go who is not himself mean, who is neither tarnished nor afraid. He must be a complete Moose and a common Moose and yet an unusual Moose. He must be, to use a rather weathered phrase, a Moose of honor.
